Introduction to Tapton:

Tapton was opened in 1969 as a mixed hall of residence.   Although originally planned as a hall for women only, the success of Ranmoor hall as a mixed hall led the university to decide before Tapton was opened that it should offer places to both men and women.

A Hall Manager, Warden and Deputy Warden administer the hall.   The Warden has overall responsibility for all aspects of hall life. The professional and administrative running of the hall is the responsibility of the Hall Manager, Sallie Tetchner, and the Catering Manager, Elaine Harrison.  The Secretaries and porters assist these in turn.  There are also eight resident tutors, who are responsible for social and pastoral care of the college's residents.

Tapton is more than just a hotel, it is a community. We accommodate some 410 students of which 75% are 1st years.  It is intended that everyone gains as much as possible from living in such an environment.  Students become members of the halls Junior Common Room (JCR) - and you can read about its members and activities elsewhere on this site.

The Senior Common Room (SCR) parallels the JCR.  It's members are the wardens, tutors, other academic and administrative staff who live in hall and a number of university staff and other members of the community who are not resident in hall.

The halls in Sheffield work to tight systems of budgetary control and are constantly developing their conference business as a way of increasing out of term income.  The interests of students are, on balance, best served by having efficiently run halls operating for up to 20 weeks of the year as a conference centre.
